On June 27 in Brooklyn, at the Barclays Center, one of the most significant fights of the year will take place. Unified WBA and WBO champion at super welterweight, 23-year-old Puerto Rican Xander Zayas, will defend his belts against Jaron "Boots" Ennis – the Philadelphian many consider one of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet. Two undefeated stars, two flawless records, one night that could be defining for both. Perhaps not for their entire careers, but certainly for this stage.

The Prodigy and Hope of a Boxing Island

Xander Zayas is the pride of Puerto Rico. At 23, he is already a unified world champion, the youngest in the sport to collect two belts in his division. In summer 2025, he won the vacant WBO title, outclassing Jorge García Pérez at Madison Square Garden. In January 2026, he added the WBA strap, defeating Abass Baraou by split decision in Puerto Rico. As a result, he became the first Puerto Rican to unify titles in this weight class.

Zayas is not a classic knockout artist (56% stoppages), but a volume and technical boxer. He improves from fight to fight, but the question remains: is the 23-year-old champion ready for the leap to a completely different class of opponent?

At such an age, it seems there is plenty of time for development. Xander is a big, technical, and smart fighter, making steady progress. Yet there are caveats. He is still developing and shaping his style. He doesn't blow opponents away one after another, nor does he rack up highlight-reel knockouts. Against determined rivals like Baraou, problems arise. Doubts at this stage are natural.

Perhaps the Best Fighter in the World

Jaron "Boots" Ennis is a special opponent. The Philadelphian has long been regarded as one of the most talented fighters of modern times. A former unified welterweight champion, in April 2025 he brutally stopped Eimantas Stanionis, adding the WBA to his IBF title.

Ennis left welterweight deliberately – moving up to super welterweight when he realized he could no longer cut weight effectively. His debut was a terrifying message to the division: a first-round knockout of Wismay Lima. His record is intimidating — 35-0, 31 knockouts, 89% stoppage rate. One of the highest among current champions.

Athletically and technically, Ennis is superb. Fast, powerful, technical. He switches stances, attacks from every angle. For most fighters, he is not just a test – he is a verdict.

Yet negotiations with bigger names have been rocky. A fight with Vergil Ortiz collapsed over disputes about weight, purses, and even Ortiz's own team. Talks with Haney reportedly stalled, though that bout never seemed realistic. Fights against Karen Chukhadzhian shook some faith in Ennis – Karen caused him too many problems and became the opponent Ennis couldn't stop in either meeting. Zayas is the one who dared to give Ennis a big night.

What's at Stake

This fight will define the hierarchy of the entire super welterweight division. For Zayas, victory means entering the ranks of those who confirm the legacy of Puerto Rican legends. It's not yet a career-defining bout, but it is a leap forward – beating a young star opponent who is considered the favorite. You couldn't script it better.

For Ennis, victory brings unified champion status in a second division and a place among the elite. From that point, unifications become possible, and skills can be backed by accomplishments. Ignoring Jaron in pound-for-pound rankings after this would be difficult.

The card will be broadcast on DAZN via PPV, scheduled for 12 rounds, for the unified WBA and WBO titles. A perfect venue. The crowd will surely split in half – Puerto Rican and Philadelphian.

Stylistically, it's a fight of volume versus finisher. Zayas wins with output, movement, and intelligence. Ennis is a versatile fighter, capable in both stances, with a rare combination of speed, precision, and destructive power. Both sometimes take risks and open up – the fight could explode at any moment.

Tale of the Tape

The fighters are physically identical: both 178 cm tall, both with 188 cm reach. The age gap is five years in Zayas's favor (23 vs 28). But Ennis holds a striking advantage in knockout power (89% vs 56%) and experience against top-level opponents.
