Lopez returns after a loss and will immediately fight in a new weight class

At the start of 2026, Teofimo Lopez lost for the first time since 2021. Five years without defeat and confident championship boxing at super lightweight ended in a meeting against Shakur Stevenson.

Lopez simply did not handle that challenge. He was insufficiently mobile, insufficiently resilient and powerful. Shakur neutralized all of his strengths and didn't let the fight develop into a brawl, winning by decision and taking the title.

The loss required a return and recovery. Lopez wasn't only restoring his morale – he was also moving up in weight. Now he will fight for a belt in the welterweight division. Potentially, Teofimo could become a champion in three categories – and he is only 29.

Romero captured the belt fighting as an underdog. And then couldn't return for a long time

Rolando Romero became WBA welterweight champion back in the spring of 2025. At a tournament in Times Square in New York, the American defeated Ryan Garcia, despite being considered a serious underdog.

After that – nothing. During this time, they tried to set him up with so many opponents. The list included Conor Benn, Devin Haney, and even Manny Pacquiao. Each time, the negotiations fell through.

Romero himself admitted that it was not easy to get through this period. Thirteen months outside the ring – the longest break in his career. At some point, Rolando even announced that he was now retired. But a high-profile fight finally came.

This fight is a test for both. Lopez should not take his opponent lightly

Purely in terms of skills and style, Teofimo Lopez looks better in all components except power. The former absolute champion can land a clean shot, but there is simply more power in Romero's hands.

However, there is no room for complacency. After defeats to Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz, Rolly significantly rethought his style. Now he is not a rough aggressor. He moves around the ring more intelligently, catches opponents on counter-attacks, and uses his power where it matters.

Lopez understands this himself:

"Honestly, I like this version of Romero the most."

At the same time, his skills should not be overestimated. All fighters of a higher class have beaten him. Gervonta – knocked him out. Isaac Cruz simply beat him into the ropes. They had a heavier punch than Teofimo, but we have also never seen Lopez in action at welterweight. He has the potential to hit harder there.

An interesting matchup in many senses. Rolando returns after a long break against an awkward opponent. Lopez in top form is capable of taking an opponent apart piece by piece. But Teofimo is also returning after a difficult loss in terms of morale – and in a new weight class, which adds a positive factor to his opponent's side.
